Tens of thousands of people joined the annual Immortal Regiment march in St. Petersburg amid heightened security measures during Victory Day commemorations in Russia.
Participants carried portraits of relatives who fought or died during World War II as they marched through the city in tribute to the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. The Immortal Regiment movement has become one of the most symbolic parts of Russia’s Victory Day events, drawing large crowds across the country each year.
Heavy security was visible throughout St. Petersburg as authorities monitored the commemorations amid ongoing tensions linked to the war in Ukraine and broader security concerns. Victory Day on May 9 remains one of Russia’s most significant national holidays, marked by military ceremonies, memorial events, and public gatherings.
The march took place as Russia commemorated the 81st anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe.
