About Video:-
after the uk and french government agreement, geological investigation was carried out which revealed that there are multiple layers of soil beneath the seabed. after the top layer, a layer of grey chalk was found which was much more stable than all the other layers and had fewer crackers and fissures. hence, this layer was selected to make the tunnel.
a total of three tunnels were built in the channel tunnel, including two railway tunnels and one service tunnel. the diameter of both railway tunnels is 7.6 meters and the diameter of the service tunnel is 4.8 meters. the total length of this tunnel is 50 kilometers, but it is 38 kilometers long under the seabed and it is built 35 to 45 kilometers below the sea bed.
to build this tunnel, 11 tbm were used which were earth pressure balancing tbm, this tbm can reduce the soil well
france and uk governments started making tunnels from their respective sides and connected them at a centre point.
when the tbms from both sides connected the tunnel, some of these bbms were buried inside the ground and some were taken out.
