Mental health professionals define Anxiety as a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically associated with an event in the future or something with an uncertain outcome. Everyone feels anxious from time to time and is a completely normal reaction to uncertainty. A lot of us have what is called high functioning anxiety….where we look calm and cool on the outside…but on the inside our minds are racing faster than a New York City Street. Not all anxiety is bad…it can help protect us with heightened reaction times in some fight or flight scenarios. But, if your anxiety is long lasting and interferes with your daily life then it’s time to get things under control…and we’ve got the steps to help put those anxious feelings in check.

STEP ONE: ACCEPTANCE
Yup…one of the simplest and most effective ways to ease your anxiety is to accept that fact that you are anxious. Do a reality check and ask yourself: Do I have good reasons to think something will go wrong? What is the worst thing that could happen? And Is there a chance I’m overly worried? Taking a moment to accept and understand your anxiety will give you the opportunity to think things through instead of panic.

STEP TWO: SHARE
Try not to avoid your anxious thoughts…that can actually trigger a panic attack. Instead, one of the best things you can do is share your anxiety with someone you trust. Talking to a friend or family member about the things that are troubling you can help you put things into perspective and see things from a different point of view.

STEP THREE: REDIRECT
Extreme anxiety can make us feel like we want to jump out of our own skin. Redirection of that intense energy can be extremely useful. Instead of sitting and worrying…get up and do something like: pace back and forth, vigorously clean something, or do some jumping jacks. These short bursts of activity can be very effective in halting your anxiety.

STEP FOUR: MENTAL VACATION
When you start to feel overwhelmed…close your eyes and picture yourself in a place that makes you happy. Try to use all of your senses…what does it look like, sound like, smell like and feel like. A brief mental vacation will help you focus on something positive and can break the cycle of your anxious thoughts.

STEP FIVE: DRINK UP
You may not realize it, but not drinking enough water can make your anxiety symptoms worse. Dehydration can actually cause heart palpitations. This can lead to feelings of panic, which may trigger an anxiety attack. Take a few moments to relax and drink a large glass of water and see if you feel any better.

Folks…there’s no true quick fix for anxiety. You may find some of these steps work for you right away and others may have no effect at all, but the important thing is to keep trying. As you can see, there’s a lot you can do on your own to relieve anxiety, but if you feel like your anxiousness is more than you can bare…don’t hesitate to reach out to your St. Luke’s primary care doctor right way. They will be able to recommend a mental health professional that has experience in treating anxiety and can teach you even more ways to recognize your anxiety and cope with it.
