India's aim of becoming a major defence manufacturing power is moving towards a historical milestone as the first Indian assembled Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft manufactured at the Tata/Airbus facility located in Vadodara, Gujarat, may soon roll off the assembly line. Recent images taken from the final assembly line show that preparations are being made for the aircraft's completion, and it appears to be on schedule or possibly even ahead of the expected delivery date of September 2026. This would be historic for India because it would be the first time an Indian private company has manufactured an aircraft for defence purposes, thereby marking a significant milestone in the government's Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems are executing this defence project jointly under the 2021 C-295 defence programme agreement. The C-295 was designed and developed for use by the military to deliver troops, provide air transport for cargo and medical personnel, and conduct tactical operations over adverse terrain. To date, more than 13,000 component parts for the C-295 have been developed and/or manufactured in India, and as an increasing number of these parts are developed and/or manufactured domestically, the programme is considered a great success for India's future aviation industry, as well as contributing to the military modernisation process and future private-sector defence manufacturing capabilities.
