Retailers Are Dumping Nintendo's $70 Games… Here's Why

Nintendo Switch 2 game prices are dropping fast at major U.S. retailers, and Nintendo doesn't appear to be doing anything to stop it. Walmart stores across the country have begun selling first party Switch 2 games like Pokemon Legends ZA, Metroid Prime 4 Beyond, Donkey Kong Bananza, Kirby Air Riders, Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, and Animal Crossing Switch 2 Edition for as low as $35 to $40. That's well below their original $60 to $70 MSRP. Just two weeks earlier, Costco put on clearance many of the same Nintendo Switch 2 titles at $29.97, which was the first major sign that physical game sales on the platform were underperforming. Two of the largest retailers in America are now independently slashing Nintendo game prices within weeks of each other, and that kind of pattern doesn't happen by accident.

The timing here is hard to ignore. On May 2, 2026, former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé gave a lecture at NYU where he explained that Nintendo's internal policy has always been to never discount its own games. He also revealed that Nintendo once completely stopped selling to Amazon after being asked to support lower pricing. Meanwhile, Nintendo's own March 2026 announcement that digital Switch 2 games on the eShop would be priced lower than physical copies has put enormous pressure on retailers like Walmart and Costco, who are now effectively competing against their own supplier. Walmart has already started listing upcoming Switch 2 releases like Yoshi and the Mysterious Book and Splatoon Raiders below MSRP at pre-order just to keep up.

The sales data paints a clear picture of why this is happening. Nintendo Switch 2 holiday sales in the U.S. were down approximately 35% compared to the original Switch's first holiday season, according to Circana data. Bloomberg reported in March 2026 that Nintendo cut U.S. Switch 2 production by 33%. The console's software attach rate sits at roughly 2.18 games per system through December 2025, which is far below the original Switch's lifetime attach rate of 9.2. Digital sales already account for over 50% of Switch 2 software revenue, and over 70% of North American Nintendo purchases are happening digitally. The shift away from physical games is accelerating. This video breaks down exactly what happened, why Nintendo's own decisions triggered the retail price collapse, and what it means for Switch 2 game prices going forward. #Nintendo #Switch2 #Gaming
