In India and Pakistan, these local workers dig wells using an ancient construction method. A single worker or more stand at the bottom of the cylindrical wall, digging circles around it. As the soil is removed, the wall sinks downwards under its own weight. At the same time, workers at the top continue adding more bricks to the top of the wall to reinforce it. The whole process is repeated over and over until the wall sinks to the water table. And the well is complete. What's interesting is that many modern wells still use this ancient construction technique, because it's safe and efficient. But instead of bricks, modern wells are built with precast concrete columns which are added on top of each other as the wall sinks downwards.
